TEST: Setting up a blog with DOI

The Prize Papers project is launching a citable, DOI-registered blog to bring together ship histories, archival discoveries, and cutting-edge historical research in one place.

At the beginning of this year, our database manager, Simone Franz, raised the idea of assigning DOIs to our case studies and other articles published on our website. These case studies have been written by our team members to showcase the breadth of research possible within the Price Papers collection and to highlight some of the incredible documents we have found. Although they are meticulously researched and historically sound, they are not citable; a DOI would change that. We want to establish a blog featuring our case studies, workshop and conference reports, and other scholarship that highlights the historical and digital competencies of our team.

The original case studies were part of the first module, the Austrian War of Succession, discussing different ships from France and Spain, as well as neutral ships, i.e. ships that belonged to polities not at war with Great Britain but that were still captured under the suspicion of collaborating with enemy nations such as France or Spain. Lately, we have added other Case Studies, such as the one about the La Perla, a Spanish register ship that was captured during the American War, or the Anne-Marie, a Danish merchant ship that was captured during the Napoleonic war under controversial circumstances.

In the future, we want to add more case studies, e.g., more on the American War, as well as the previously mentioned workshop and conference reports, and bachelor's and master's theses by students writing about the Prize Papers. Therefore, we are not only diversifying our output, but we will also, over time, increase our output of articles. This calls for publishing these articles in a new format: blog posts. As part of the redesign, we probably have to redo some of our website and republish older case studies under a Creative Commons License and a new news format that will help us publish these blog posts with a DOI.

If you made it this far: Congratulations on reading my test run for the news feature needed to establish the new blog.
